So in December I’ll be moving from Washington state back to my native Texas. I just wanna ask y’all what are some cool places I should check out on the way or about any detours worth taking. I’m not in a hurry, I literally have the entire month to get from point A to B. Also I’m not going to be in a moving van or anything I’ll be in my Integra the whole time :)
Also any podcasts I should download to listen to on the way? Because in all honesty listening to punk rock and metal for 30+ hours sound like some shit they’d do in Gitmo.

Well obviously you need to spend time in Utah. Go skiing in Salt Lake, drive down to a few of the national parks (Zion, Arches, etc) and then you can do head south from there.

Also, I think you’ve found the smallest US map on the internet.

podcasts: pretty much all of “Stuff You Should Know” and I’ve enjoyed a new series called “Secrets, Crimes, & Audiotape” it is an audio drama kind of like old school radio stories.

Stop in Jerome, AZ and go to the Gold King Mine Ghost Town. First off the town is a really neat old mining town on the side of the mountain. And second, the ghost town is really mostly a collection of old/antique cars, equipment, engines, and whatever else this guy could get his hands on. My dad and I had a blast walking around looking at all the old stuff there.

I would check out the Grand Tetons NP, then head to Utah and drive through southern Utah. The Rockies in CO are nice, but the rest of that state sucks. Utah would make a much cooler drive.

Normally I would say to make sure to go across Washington via the North Cascades Highway and then stay on SR20 across Sherman Pass, but the highway will probably be closed by then and I assume you’ve driven it anyway.

Where in TX? Anyway I’d recommend the Grand Canyon. Also the VLA in NM is worth driving through just because it is so surreal to see. Obviously it is big and flat and straight, but there are some awesome twisty mountain passes that take you down into and out of canyons between AZ and Socorro, NM along the way. I think on AZ260 but it might have been US60 in NM.

Drive route
89A from Flagstaff, AZ to Sedona, AZ
. It’s about an hour drive through some very pretty country (stop at least once and walk down to the creek) and will end you in one of the most gorgeous parts of the country (Sedona). If you can, spring for lunch at the resort L’Auberge de Sedona. You can sit right down by the creek, and it’s really a nice experience.
I’d also recommend staying a night or two in Flagstaff, pretty funlittle college town with some good craft beer. Or if you feel like doing some hiking and/or camping, check out
West Clear Creek
(about 45min south east of Sedona)

I think I will go throw Utah instead of Cali. I’ve been to Utah once and enjoyed it and my only pull to cali is the PCH and san fran, but this may be one of the last times in my life to see snow lol

I saw snow in Texas...or what could technically be called snow.

What sort of tires are you driving on? Going in December through a lot of that area might get very snowy.

It’ll be all seasons. They’ll be new getting them end of this month or early November. You’re right though Utah in December might not be the best idea :/
Debating between Cooper CS3s and General AltiMAX RT43 to be specific. Neither of which I think would be a substitute for snows :(

How bad will the snow be in Utah in December? As someone else brought up I’ll be on all seasons (although at least brand new) are their any highways that they’re good about plowing and would I be able to make it out to the state parks and such on A/S?

Nah they don’t substitute for snows but a new set of all seasons that are at least M+S rated will get you through without too much trouble in an Integra (assuming you arent pushing 300hp or something, but i dont think snow tires would solve that issue haha). Utah is quite varied in terrain. I imagine some of the lower elevation stuff would be fine, you just have to worry about mountain passes and such. I am planning a drive from NJ to CA next year and am trying to avoid colder months for that reason. But I will be on summers and intentionally seeking for mountains. If you havent done the PCH or any Southern California roads, then that could be a great way to avoid the weather and have a great time. Then there is plenty of safe-for-winter stuff available through Arizona and New Mexico.

No worries. I mean, a freak storm could hit and then you’d be stuffed but the truth is that we don’t get a ton of snow in December and the roads are cleared pretty fast. worst case you would be stalled for a day here. Once you get south its pretty unlikely that snow will slow you down too much (though it could in the cedar breaks/zion area since its up high. Its a risk, but a totally manageable risk. If you are really worried just get some cheap chains as a safety.

One day I want to drive from Las Vegas, where I live, to Alaska. I would drive to LA and take highway 1 along the coast as far as it went then figure it out when it ends.
That is basically my dream road trip.

All that stuff that’s been mentioned. Portland and southern Oregon are awesome. Grand Canyon and Zion are a must. Stop at the Hoover Dam; I love architecture so it was my favorite part about Vegas. Hit up White Sands in NM if you’re nearby.
Avoid Whichita Falls.

You’ll probably be fine, I’ve driven around just fine on nearly bald no-seasons though Canadian winters (but I acknowledge it was a bad idea). Just try to track down a set of tire chains to keep around for the mountain passes just in case. In BC you’re actually required to have snow tires or carry chains if you want to go through the mountain passes, so I imagine it’s the same further south too. Plus it’s a good idea and all.

Stop at the ape caves on your way east past mount st helens. 3000 year old lava tube that you can go hiking through. The guided tour is fun.
